A: Chameleon flower (known botanically as Houttuynia cordata) is a variegated, trailing, wet-soil-tolerant perennial that looks great in a pot but turns into a real thug in the garden. It spreads very fast and outcompetes just about everything in its path, so it doesn't make a friendly partner to other plants. Chameleon plant is very pretty with its lavender tinged heart-shaped leaves and easy-going nature. But it is this nature that becomes the problem. ... In several southwestern provinces of China like Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnah, the roots of this plant is consumed as a root vegetable. The leaves of the chameleon plant are sometimes found in Vietnamese salads and garnishes. In Vietnam, many other fresh herbs serve the same purpose (see Vietnamese coriander). Their fresh, aromatic flavour goes even well with European salads.

What does chameleon plant smell like?

Aside from being a non-native and invasive plant, it's been described as having a fishy smell to it (a nickname is “fishmint”).

TAKING CARE OF YOUR NEW PLANT(s): Upon receipt, immediately soak roots in water for 2-3 hours then plant in your ideal location. Make sure to water daily, or as needed, if leaves look wilted and/or until it is established in it's new environment. Sometimes it is best to place in a 6"-8" pot of quality soil and let the root system get adjusted and strengthen, then transplant the hole pot of soil to your permanent location. Plants can get easily stressed when being relocated/shipped.
