ABOUT RED MAPLES & HOW TO CARE FOR THEM: Red maples prefer somewhat moist soil but will grow fine in dry soils provided you are willing to irrigate them regularly (slow, deep watering is the ideal). Once established, make sure the soil remains moist—a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree will help. Over most of its range, red maple is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions, perhaps more so than any other tree in eastern North America. It can be found growing in swamps, on poor dry soils, and almost anywhere in between. It grows well from sea level to about 900 m (3,000 ft).

Common Names: Red maple, swamp maple
Soil Type: Adaptable; sandy to clay
Soil pH: 4.5 to 6.5
Plant Type: Deciduous tree

What is the lifespan of a red maple? 80 to 100 years
By tree standards, red maples don't live very long. The average lifespan is only 80 to 100 years. The oldest ones may reach 200 years of age, but this is extremely rare.

When should I plant a red maple tree?
Fall is the ideal time of year to plant your baby maple tree—or any other tree, for that matter. The cool weather of fall gives roots a chance to grow, develop and get established without the stress of developing new leaves or fruit.

Is red maple a good tree?
tall shade tree that works well in most situations. Unless irrigated or on a wet site, a red maple is best used north of USDA hardiness zone 9; the species is often much shorter in the southern part of its range, unless it is growing next to a stream or on a wet site.
