UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: African bird's eye chili peppers, also known as peri-peri or pili pili, typically range from 100,000 to 225,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), with some sources listing specific ranges like 175,000 SHU. These small, hot peppers have a clean flavor with earthy notes and a fruity undertone, and are commonly used in African, Mediterranean, and Thai cuisines, particularly for meats, grilling, sauces, and stews.

African bird's eye chilies are small, pointed, very hot peppers, also known as piri-piri peppers. They are a species of Capsicum frutescens and are a staple in African cuisines, especially for making the famous peri-peri sauce, though they are now cultivated and used globally. With a heat level between 50,000 and 175,000 Scoville heat units, they offer a fruity flavor along with their intense spiciness. CharacteristicsSize: The chilies are typically small, ranging from ½ inch to 1 inch long. Heat: They are a hot chili, with a Scoville rating that can reach up to 175,000 SHU, making them significantly hotter than a jalapeno. Appearance: The pods are slender, tapering to a blunt point, and change from green to bright red or purple as they mature. Flavor: They offer a fruity and exotic flavor alongside their high heat. Culinary UsesPeri-Peri Sauce:.They are a key ingredient in peri-peri sauce, a spicy vinegar and lemon-based condiment popular in Africa and Portugal. Dishes:.They are used to add heat and flavor to a variety of dishes, including grilled meats (like peri-peri chicken), fish, vegetables, soups, and salads. Condiments:.They can be processed into pastes or powders or even eaten raw as a side dish. Origin and CultivationThough first domesticated in the Americas, African bird's eye chilies have grown wild and been cultivated in Africa for centuries, particularly in countries like Uganda, Malawi, and Mozambique. The plant is a bushy, productive shrub, with the fruits growing upright on the branches

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat.
