UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The NuMex Lumbre pepper, also known as "Hatch Double-X Hot," is an extra-hot variety of New Mexico chile known for its exceptional heat and distinctive smoky flavor. Developed by New Mexico chile farmers, its name means "fire" in Spanish. This chili is significantly hotter than the typical Hatch pepper.
 
Key characteristics
Heat level: The Lumbre pepper has a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating that averages between 9,000 and 10,000 units, making it one of the hottest New Mexico chile types. For context, this is about as spicy as some serrano and jalapeno peppers.
Appearance: Lumbre chiles are smaller than many other New Mexico varieties, typically growing to be 4 to 7 inches long. They have a waxy, semi-thick flesh and ripen from green to a vibrant red.
Flavor: The flavor is described as grassy, sweet, and earthy, with a smoky undertone that comes alive after roasting. The heat is more potent when the pepper has fully ripened to red.
Uses: This versatile pepper is prized for its heat and flavor. It is excellent for roasting, grilling, or drying and grinding into a spice powder. Its intensity makes it a great addition to sauces, salsas, chilis, and stews for those who want extra fire.
Growing information: Maturity: The peppers are ready for harvest in about 75 days. They can be picked when green for a slightly milder heat or left on the vine to turn red for maximum spiciness.
Sun and soil: As a frost-sensitive plant, NuMex Lumbre grows as an annual and requires full sun exposure. The seeds germinate best when the soil is warm.
Plant size: The plants typically grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet. The "XXL" name
 
The "XXL" in the name 'NuMex Lumbre XXL' is likely a marketing distinction rather than an official botanical designation. It is used to emphasize that this is an extra-hot (often noted as X-Hot or Double-X Hot) variant of the Hatch-type chile, or it might refer to a larger-than-average Lumbre pepper. The term "XXL" does not imply it is a larger pepper than other varieties, as the Lumbre is notably smaller than the milder New Mexico chiles like 'Big Jim

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
