UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell!
ABOUT THESE SEEDS:
Bulgarian Carrot Peppers, also known as Shipkas or Hot Carrots, are a very hot pepper variety known for their bright orange, carrot-shaped pods. These peppers have a unique crunchy texture and a flavor that is both fruity and slightly sweet, with a moderate to hot level of spice.
Key Features:
- Appearance: Bright orange, 3-4 inch long, carrot-shaped peppers.
- Flavor: Crunchy texture with a sweet, tangy, and slightly fruity flavor, combined with a moderate to hot heat.
- Heat Level: Typically rated between 20,000-30,000 Scoville units, making them a hot pepper.
- Uses: Suitable for both raw and cooked applications, including salsas, chutneys, roasting, stir-frying, and grilling.
- Plant: Compact plants, often reaching about 18 inches tall, with pendant pods.
- History: Rumored to have been smuggled out of Russia in the late 1980s and have spread across Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States.
Growing Information:
- Bulgarian Carrot Peppers do well in areas with cool nights.
- They are a relatively easy pepper to grow and can thrive in containers as well as in-ground beds.
- Starting seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost is recommended.
- They need full sun and well-draining soil.
- Water regularly, making sure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged.
Culinary Uses:
- Bulgarian Carrot Peppers are a versatile addition to various dishes, including salsas, chutneys, sauces, and hot pepper jelly.
- Their crunchy texture makes them ideal for roasting and pickling.
- They can also be used in marinades and stir-fries.
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).

Scott & Melissa
