UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS:
The "Hot Portugal" pepper is a medium-hot, long, and thin chili pepper with a glossy red color when ripe. It's known for its sweet and slightly fruity flavor with a touch of heat. It's a popular choice for adding flavor and a moderate amount of spice to various dishes, and can be used fresh, roasted, dried, or crushed into flakes.
Here's more detail about the Hot Portugal pepper:
Appearance: It's a long, thin pepper, typically around 6 inches long, with a glossy, bright red skin when mature.
Flavor: It has a sweet, fruity flavor with a hint of smokiness and a moderate heat level.
Heat Level: The heat can vary, but it's generally comparable to a Cayenne pepper, around 10,000 to 30,000 on the Scoville scale.
Culinary Uses: Hot Portugal peppers are versatile and can be used in a variety of ways, including: Fresh in salads, salsas, and stir-fries. Roasted and added to sauces, stews, and soups. Dried and crushed into flakes or powder. Pickled.
Growing: They are relatively easy to grow, with seeds germinating best in warm soil, and they prefer full sun and well-drained soil.
Origin: While its exact history is debated, it's believed to have originated from Portugal or possibly developed in the United States in the 1920s.
Other Names: It's also sometimes referred to as "Portuguese Red Hot Finger".
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).

Scott & Melissa
