The Amethyst Fire pepper is a beautiful ornamental and super-hot pepper (around 70,000-100,000 SHU) with deep purple foliage and fruit that ripens through a spectrum of colors, including purple, peach, orange, and red. It is an unstable, open-pollinated variety, meaning different phenotypes (versions) of the pepper exist, but it is known for its vibrant appearance, heat, and unique floral-berry flavor. It is not a hybrid bell pepper but a distinct, naturally occurring or bred pepper that can be used fresh, in hot sauces, salsas, or for visual appeal.

Characteristics

  • Appearance:

The plants have dark green foliage with significant purple highlights, stems, and white flowers. The fruits themselves are also visually striking, displaying shades of purple, peach, and orange as they mature.

  • Flavor:

The pepper is described as having a sweet, floral taste with a hint of blueberry.

  • Heat:

It is a super-hot pepper with a Scoville heat unit (SHU) rating of approximately 70,000 to 100,000, similar to or hotter than a jalapeno, but with a more complex "wild" flavor.

  • Origin:

It is an unstable, open-pollinated cross, believed to be derived from a Black Peach Biquinho pepper.

Uses

  • Culinary: The peppers can be used fresh, in hot sauces, salsas, or for dehydration.
  • Ornamental: The Amethyst Fire is a popular choice for ornamental gardening due to its attractive foliage and colorful fruit
