UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS:The orange jalapeno, often called NuMex Orange Spice jalapeno, is a vibrant variety known for its bright orange color and fruity, slightly sweet flavor with a classic jalapeno heat. It's a cross between the Early Jalapeno and the Permagreen bell pepper, developed at New Mexico State University. These peppers are not just visually appealing but also offer a culinary twist with their unique taste and versatility in cooking.
Key characteristics of the NuMex Orange Spice jalapeno:
- Color: Ripens from green to a bright, deep orange.
- Flavor: A classic jalapeno flavor with a noticeable sweetness and fruitiness, making it stand out from regular jalapenos.
- Heat: Typically ranges from 10,000 to 15,000 Scoville Heat Units, similar to a standard jalapeno, though some can be spicier.
- Size: About half the size of a typical jalapeno, with a long, tapered shape, according to Garden Hoard.
- Uses: Great for fresh salsas, pickling, drying, stuffing, and adding a colorful kick to various dishes.
- Growth: Plants can reach about 2 feet in height and are relatively productive.
Unique traits:
Unique color:
The orange color persists throughout the ripening process, unlike some other colored jalapeno varieties, according to Super Hot Chiles.
Fruitiness:
The sweetness and fruitiness of the flavor is more pronounced than in standard green jalapenos.
Crack resistance:
NuMex Orange Spice peppers can develop cracks due to humidity and air, but these are different from tomato cracks and heal as they appear.
Growing tips:
- Sunlight: Requires 8-12 hours of sunlight.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 70-95°F.
- Soil: Well-draining soil is recommended.
- Starting seeds: Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).

Scott & Melissa
