UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: 
 
The Zou-Pi pepper, also known as the Shar Pei pepper, is a rare, wrinkly pepper variety originating from China. It's known for its unique appearance, with heavily wrinkled skin, and its distinct smoky, fruity flavor. With a Scoville heat unit (SHU) rating of 5,000 to 10,000, it offers a medium level of spiciness.

Appearance:
The most striking feature of the Zou-Pi pepper is its heavily wrinkled skin, reminiscent of a Shar Pei dog, hence its name. 
It ripens from green to a bright red color. 
The pods are typically about 2.75 inches long. 
Flavor and Heat:
The flavor is described as smoky and fruity, with a unique taste that is not commonly found in other pepper varieties. 
The heat level is medium, ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 SHU, making it spicier than a jalapeno. 
Growing:
Zou-Pi peppers are relatively easy to grow, with plants reaching 3-4 feet tall.
They thrive in warm temperatures and require 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Well-draining, nutrient-rich soil is recommended.
The plants can be productive, with a high yield of peppers. 
Culinary Uses:
Zou-Pi peppers are versatile in the kitchen.
They can be used fresh in salads, sliced for stir-fries, or pickled.
They can also be dried and ground into flakes or powder for seasoning.

It is a landrace variety, meaning it has adapted to a specific region and is not commonly found elsewhere. 
Some sources suggest it's one of the first varieties to ripen in the garden. 

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
