UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The Valencia Tomato is a prized, open-pollinated heirloom slicing tomato known for its vibrant yellow-orange color and sweet, rich flavor.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Size & Weight: Medium-to-large round globes weighing 8–10 ounces (about 2 to 4 inches across).
Flavor & Texture: Meaty and juicy interior with very few seeds, low acidity, and a complex, sweet "old-time" tomato taste.
Color: A bright sunset-orange or deep golden hue resembling a Valencia orange, which inspired its name.
Plant Habit: Indeterminate (vining plants that continuously grow, flower, and produce fruit all season long until frost). Plants reach roughly 4 to 6 feet tall and require staking or caging.
Days to Maturity: Roughly 75–80 days (though some micro-climates report slightly earlier mid-season harvests around 76 days).
Origin & Background
Despite often being traced as a family heirloom from Maine or connected by name to Valencia, Spain, it has historic roots deeply tied to US heirloom growers and is recognized in the Slow Food Ark of Taste as a valuable traditional variety. It is noted for performing exceptionally well and remaining productive even in cooler northern climates or shorter growing seasons.
Growing Tips
Sunlight: Plant in a spot receiving 6–8 hours of direct, full sun daily.Soil: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil amended with compost, with an ideal pH between 6.0 and 7.0.Spacing: Space plants about 2–3 feet apart in rows spaced 3–4 feet apart.
Support: Because of its vigorous, heavy-yielding indeterminate vines, robust staking or tomato cages are necessary to keep the fruit off the ground.
