UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a tall biennial plant with fuzzy, soft leaves and bright yellow flowers. Native to Eurasia, it grows well in dry, open, and disturbed areas like roadsides and waste places.

Growth Cycle

First Year: Forms a low cluster of thick, velvety, gray-green leaves called a basal rosette.

Second Year: Sends up a tall, unbranched central flowering stalk reaching 2 to 8 feet high.

Flowers & Seeds: Produces small yellow flowers from June to August, then dies. Each plant drops thousands of long-lasting seeds.

Common Names: Also known as flannel plant, velvet plant, woolly mullein, and candlewick plant because people used its soft leaves and dried stems dipped in wax.

Herbal Uses: Leaves and flowers are brewed into teas

Medicinal Uses: Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a traditional herbal remedy commonly used to ease respiratory issues like coughs, sore throats, and bronchitis. While historical and lab studies suggest it may reduce inflammation and fight bacteria, major health benefits lack definitive proof in humans, and the FDA has not approved it to treat any condition.

Potential Traditional Uses

Lung and airway support: Used as a tea or steam inhalation to help soothe irritated bronchial tissues and loosen mucus.

Earaches: Found in certain herbal ear drops combined with other oils to help relieve minor ear pain.

Skin healing: Applied historically as a poultice or warm compress for minor wounds and skin irritations.

Safety and Side Effects

Side effects: Generally considered safe with very few reported side effects, though plant hairs can cause irritation if not strained well in teas.

Toxicity warning: Mullein seeds contain rotenone, which is toxic; preparations should use only the leaves or flowers without seeds.

Pregnancy and nursing: Safety is unproven, so pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should avoid use.

Medical advice: Always talk to a doctor before using herbal supplements, especially if you have asthma, COPD, or take prescription drugs.

HOW TO SOW: To sow mullein seeds, scatter the tiny seeds directly on top of bare soil in full sun during spring or fall. Do not cover them, as mullein seeds need light to germinate. Press the seeds gently into the earth and keep the soil moist until sprouts appear in two to three weeks Sincerely, Scott & Melissa Unique Primtiques Custom Woodworking Unique Creek Homestead ABOUT OUR UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD: Our woodworking business is located on our Unique Creek Homestead, a Certified National Wildlife Sanctuary & Certified Indiana Wildlife Sanctuary located in southern Indiana, where we grow our own organic foods, gourmet mushrooms, exotic gourmet organic peppers, organic seeds, organically grown flowers, 100% pure organic Unique Creek Maple Syrup and more!
