UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The HJ2 Meteor (Hangjiao #2) is a unique Chinese "space pepper" developed from seeds sent into space to experience cosmic radiation and microgravity.
Origin & Background
Name Meaning: "Hang" refers to spaceflight, and "jiao" means pepper.
The Space Program: Initiated by Chinese scientists and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, seeds were sent on recoverable spacecraft (such as early Shenzhou missions). Exposure to space environments increases natural mutation rates, producing lines selected for disease resistance, larger size, and heavy yields.
Designation: The HJ2 Meteor is the second numbered selection from this space-bred line.
Plant & Pod Characteristics
Pod Shape: Long, twisted, and distinctively corkscrew-shaped, reaching lengths of up to 10 to 12 inches.
Color Maturation: Pods start light green and ripen to a deep crimson red.
Plant Habit: Prolific, fast-growing, robust, and noted for strong disease resistance.
Structure: Broad structure with thin-to-medium-walled crispness.
Flavor & Heat Profile
Heat Level (SHU): Mild to medium heat, typically ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)—comparable to a jalapeño, but with a slower, flatter burn on the back of the tongue.
Flavor: Juicy, crunchy, and sweet with a pleasant, fruity (honeydew or kiwi-like) undertone and no bitterness.
Uses & Growing Tips
Culinary Uses: Best consumed fresh in salads, sliced for pepper steak, or chopped into stir-fries where a mild, fruity kick is desired. They are also suitable for drying.
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
