UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The Dieghito Jalapeño pepper is a rare, highly sought-after variant of the classic jalapeño. Originally bred in Italy by grower Diego Drax, this unique pepper is an open-pollinated cross between a Farmers' Market Jalapeño (known for its heavy corking) and a Cherry Bomb pepper.
It is widely celebrated by pepper enthusiasts for its distinct heart-like or bell-pepper shape, intensely juicy texture, and remarkable sweetness.
Flavor Profile & Heat
The Taste: While it maintains the bold, crisp bite of a standard jalapeño, it is noticeably sweeter and much juicier. When eaten green, it has a bright, tangy flavor. As it matures to a deep red, the sugars peak, creating a beautifully balanced fruity sweetness.
Heat Level: It generally ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), though some variations can reach up to 15,000 SHU. This places it right at—or slightly above—the heat of a traditional jalapeño, making it perfectly family-friendly for everyday cooking.
Appearance & Characteristics
Unique Shape: Unlike the sleek, torpedo shape of a standard jalapeño, Dieghito pods are round, stubby, and heart-shaped, measuring roughly 2 to 2.5 inches across.
Thick Walls: The pepper features exceptionally thick, meaty walls. This makes the pods remarkably crunchy and holds an incredible amount of juice.
Heavy Corking: As the peppers grow, they develop extensive corking—fine, wood-like stretch marks and cracks on the skin. While some novice growers mistake this for a flaw, pepper aficionados highly prize corking as a sign of peak flavor, texture, and maturity.
Culinary Uses
Because of its unique build, the Dieghito Jalapeño is considered "stuffed pepper heaven". Its wide, heart-shaped cavity and robust, thick walls make it the absolute perfect vessel for cream cheese, cheddar, bacon, or sausage poppers without tearing or collapsing. It is also highly recommended for:
Crafting artisanal, sweet-and-spicy salsas.
Pickling into crisp, thick rings.
Roasting or grilling over open flames to blister the skin and caramelize its natural sugars.
Growing Information
If you are looking to cultivate this variety in your garden, it behaves similarly to most Capsicum annuum species:
Plant Size: The plants are relatively compact and vigorous, typically reaching 3 to 4 feet tall in garden beds, but they can easily be kept around 12 to 18 inches if grown as an ornate container plant.
Days to Harvest: Roughly 75 to 90 days from the time you transplant them outdoors.
Overwintering: It behaves as a perennial if protected from frost. It adapts wonderfully to pots, meaning you can bring it indoors during cold winters to fruit year after year.
Stability Note: Depending on your seed provider, this variety sits between its F5 and F10 generations. While mostly stable, you may still see slight, exciting variations in pod shape or plant yield from seed to seed. Because the heavy pods can weigh down the branches, staking the plant for support is highly recommended.
