UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The Thunder Mountain Chocolate pepper—most commonly known as the Thunder Cacho Brown or Chocolate Thunder Mountain Longhorn—is an exceptionally rare, extra-long pepper variety. It is a unique hybrid originally bred by master grower Jes Christensen of Denmark. He crossed the incredibly long Thunder Mountain Longhorn from China with the mild, brown Cacho Negro from Costa Rica.

Profile of the Thunder Cacho Brown

  • Appearance: These striking peppers produce noodle-like, twisted, and curling pods that reach an impressive 10 to 12 inches in length. They ripen from green to a deep, rich chocolate brown color with slightly wrinkled skin, visually resembling a giant, elongated Tootsie Roll.
  • Flavor Profile: Unlike many chocolate-colored peppers that tend to have heavy earthy or bitter notes, the Thunder Cacho Brown is distinctly sweet and fruity. It has thin but crispy walls that provide a nice crunch, offering tasting notes of tart cherry and sweet melon. The aroma carries a gentle hint of woodsy smoke.
  • Heat Level: It features a highly manageable medium heat, roughly equivalent to a jalapeño. The burn is flat and comfortable, lingering gently on the tongue and cheeks rather than overpowering the palate.
  • Interior: Inside the slender pod is a massive collection of seeds and a stringy placenta running nearly the entire length of the pepper.

Culinary Uses & Versatility

Because it inherits a slightly thicker flesh than its Chinese parent variety, the Thunder Cacho Brown is highly versatile in the kitchen:

  • Fresh Applications: Excellent sliced into stir-fries, salsas, or fresh summer salads.
  • Sauces & Seasonings: Its unique color and fruity-smokey depth make it a stellar choice for hot sauces and marinades.
  • Drying: Just like its ancestral varieties, it can be sun-dried or smoked to create a complex, sweet, and mild chili powder.

Plant Growth Habits

The plants are vigorous, highly productive, and grow to a height of 3 to 4 feet tall. They feature dark green leaves and yield heavily from summer into late fall, making them a dramatic, conversation-starting centerpiece in home gardens.

To see a live demonstration of its crispy texture, internal seed structure, and specific sweetness profile, watch this review of the ripened pod:

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).

Excellent for stuffed peppers, nacho chips & cheese, tacos, chilis, stews, salads, salsas, pickled peppers, on sandwiches, snack crunchers and more!

Sincerely,

Scott & Melissa
