UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell!

ABOUT THESE SEEDS:

Chilly Chili is an ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum) known for its colorful, non-pungent fruit. These peppers start greenish-yellow, then turn orange, and finally mature to a deep red, making them visually appealing for gardens and containers. While they are safe to eat and are not spicy, they are primarily grown for their attractive appearance.

Key features of Chilly Chili pepper:

  • Ornamental: The vibrant color change throughout the growing season makes them a popular choice for landscaping and container gardening.
  • Non-pungent: The peppers are not spicy and are considered safe for children to play with.
  • Edible: While not their primary use, the peppers can be eaten and are considered mild and flavorful.
  • Growth Habit: They grow upright and mounded, reaching about 9-10 inches tall and 13-14 inches wide.
  • Hardiness: They are heat-tolerant and can thrive in USDA hardiness zones 9-11.
  • Fruit: The fruit is 2-2.5 inches long, slender, and grows in clusters.
  • Uses: The peppers can be used as ornamental garnishes on salads or ethnic entrees, or in fall and holiday decorations.

In summary, Chilly Chili peppers are a visually striking and safe-to-eat ornamental variety known for their vibrant color changes and mild, non-spicy flavor.

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
