UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: Fresno peppers are medium-sized chili peppers known for their mild-to-moderate heat, fruity flavor, and distinct thin walls. First cultivated in 1952 by Clarence Brown Hamlin, they are named after Fresno County, California and are genetically distinct from the jalapeño pepper, despite their remarkably similar appearance.

Profile Overview

Heat Level: 2,500 to 10,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

Size: 2 to 3 inches long, roughly 1 inch wide at the base.

Shape: Conical with a wide shoulder, tapering down to a rounded point.

Growth Habit: Pods grow pointing straight up toward the sky, unlike jalapeños which hang downward.

Flavor Profile & Maturation

Fresno peppers change drastically in flavor and heat as they ripen through three stages:

Green (Unripe): Harvested in the summer, these have a bright, crisp, and grassy taste similar to a standard jalapeño but with a milder punch.

Orange (Transition): A rare midway stage that offers an elevation in heat and a slight increase in sweetness.

Red (Mature): Harvested in the fall, fully ripe red Fresnos develop a much more complex, sweet, and distinctly smoky flavor profile. They also reach their peak heat potential at this stage.

Excellent for stuffed peppers, nacho chips & cheese, tacos, chilis, stews, salads, salsas, pickled peppers, on sandwiches, snack crunchers and more!

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
