UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS:The Pot-a-Peno is a unique, compact, and early-maturing jalapeno pepper variety known for its cascading growth habit, making it ideal for containers, hanging baskets, and small spaces. It's an All-America Selections (AAS) Winner, recognized for its ornamental and productive qualities.
Here's a more detailed look:
Key Characteristics:
Unique Habit:
The Pot-a-Peno's cascading growth makes it stand out, with peppers hanging down below the foliage, resembling a "pot-a-peno".
Compact Size:
It typically grows to 12-15 inches tall and 18-20 inches wide, making it perfect for small gardens and containers.
Early Maturing:
The Pot-a-Peno matures quickly, with green peppers ready for harvest in 45-50 days and red, ripe peppers in 60-65 days.
Flavor:
Green peppers offer a traditional spicy jalapeno flavor, while fully ripened red peppers develop a sweet, spicy taste.
Heat Level:
While it's a jalapeno, the Pot-a-Peno is considered mildly hot, with a Scoville heat unit rating of around 5,000, according to Eden Brothers.
Productivity:
It produces a high yield of peppers under a dense canopy of small, dark green leaves.
Growing Tips:
- Sunlight: Requires full sun for optimal growth.
- Containers: Ideal for 8-inch pots or hanging baskets.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
- Harvesting: Peppers can be harvested green for a spicier flavor or left to ripen to red for a sweeter, milder taste.
- Starting Seeds: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, transplanting them after the danger of frost has passed.
Uses:
Culinary:
The Pot-a-Peno is excellent for salsas, pickling, or any dish where you'd typically use jalapenos.
Ornamental:
Its unique cascading habit and colorful peppers make it an attractive addition to any garden or patio.
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
Sincerely,
Scott & Melissa
