UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS:

Purple jalapeno peppers are a visually striking variety known for their vibrant purple color, which transitions to red as they mature. They are considered an heirloom ornamental pepper hybrid, prized for their beauty and moderate heat level. While often used for ornamental purposes, they are also edible and offer a slightly sweeter flavor compared to traditional green jalapenos, making them suitable for various culinary applications.

Key Characteristics:

  • Color: Start green, mature to a deep purple, and eventually turn red.
  • Heat Level: Medium, ranging from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), similar to standard jalapenos.
  • Flavor: Slightly sweeter than green jalapenos.
  • Plant: Ornamental, with beautiful purple flowers.
  • Uses: Can be used fresh, pickled, or cooked in various dishes.

Culinary Uses:

  • Pickling:

    .

Their unique color makes them visually appealing in pickled pepper mixes.

  • Salsas and Sauces:

    .

Fresh purple jalapenos can be incorporated into salsas and hot sauces for a spicy kick and vibrant color.

  • Salads and Sandwiches:

    .

They can be sliced and added to salads or used as a topping for sandwiches.

  • Pickled or Grilled:

    .

Purple jalapenos can be pickled or lightly grilled for added flavor and texture.

Growing Information:

  • Sunlight: Prefer full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is ideal.
  • Maturity: Reach maturity in about 75 days from transplant.
  • Hardiness Zones: Suitable for growing in USDA zones 2-11.
  • Propagation: Can be grown from seeds and are commonly grown in containers, garden plots, raised beds, and greenhouses.

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
