A beef tomato or beefsteak tomato is one of the largest varieties of cultivated tomatoes, some weighing 450 grams or more. Most are pink or red with numerous small seed compartments distributed throughout the fruit, sometimes displaying pronounced ribbing similar to ancient pre-Columbian tomato cultivars.

Beefsteak tomatoes are large, juicy tomatoes perfect for eating fresh from the harvest. Beefsteaks are typically wide tomatoes, but the more round types have a sweeter flavor.

    5 to 12 days

Starting Seeds: It takes around six to eight weeks to grow tomatoes from seed to plantable seedlings. Start seeds indoors for best results. In 5 to 12 days your tomato seeds should germinate. Germination is best in warm temperatures (68° to 75° Fahrenheit (20-24° Celcius)).

A raised bed warms early in the season and is a good method for how to grow beefsteak tomatoes in cooler climates. Work in compost or other organic amendments to the soil before you plant and incorporate a starter fertilizer to get the little plants off to a good start. Allow spacing of at least 5 feet (1.5 m.)
