UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS:
The Rio Grande pepper is a Capsicum annuum variety known for its high yield and mild heat. It produces elongated, green peppers that mature to a red color. They have a crunchy texture and a sweet, mildly hot flavor, making them suitable for fresh eating, cooking, and various preservation methods like drying and pickling.
Here's a more detailed look:
Appearance:
Rio Grande peppers are typically 3.5 to 6 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, starting green and ripening to a vibrant red.
Flavor and Heat:
They offer a sweet and mildly hot taste, with a Scoville heat unit range of 500-2,500, making them less spicy than a jalapeño.
Culinary Uses:
Rio Grande peppers are versatile and can be used fresh in salads and salsas, or cooked in various dishes. They are also popular for drying, pickling, and making hot sauces.
Growing:
These peppers are known for their high yields and are well-suited for home gardens and market growing. They prefer full sun and are typically grown as annuals, reaching a height of 18-24 inches.
Maturity:
They take 75-80 days to mature from seed.
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
Sincerely,
Scott & Melissa
