UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: Broadleaf Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a robust, woody perennial subshrub prized for its large, velvety, and highly aromatic gray-green leaves. Belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae), this Mediterranean native serves as both a staple culinary herb and an attractive garden landscape plant.

Botanical Profile

Foliage: Large, wide, oval leaves with a distinct wrinkled or pebbly texture. They feature soft white hairs on the underside, giving them a silvery hue.

Growth Habit: Forms a compact, bushy mound growing 1.5 to 2.5 feet tall and wide. Stems start soft and green but become woody in their second year.

Flowers: Produces upright spikes of two-lipped, lavender-blue to pinkish flowers in late spring or early summer. The blooms are edible and highly attractive to pollinators.

Culinary Uses

Flavor Profile: Broadleaf sage offers a warm, savory, and robust flavor with notes of camphor, mint, and citrus. Its taste profile is more pronounced than finer-leafed varieties.

Kitchen Use: Widely utilized fresh or dried in heavy, savory dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with roasted meats, poultry fillings, sausage seasoning, root vegetables, and herbal teas.

HOW TO GROW: To grow broad-leaved sage (Salvia officinalis) from seed, start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost. Press seeds 1/4 inch deep into moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the soil at 65–70°F. Germination takes 7 to 21 days. Transplant seedlings outdoors in full sun after the danger of frost has passed.
