UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell. Heat pads, plant lights and humidity domes will greatly help seed germination rates.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The serrano pepper is a type of chili pepper that originated in the mountainous regions of the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo. The name of the pepper is a reference to the mountains of these regions. The pepper is commonly used to make giardiniera.
Serrano peppers include immense nutrients, which have many health benefits. For example, it contains potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C, calcium, vitamin A and much more. In addition, its high antioxidant content reduces oxidative stress. Also, it has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Serrano peppers (pronounced seh-RAH-noh) are hot, literally. With a ranking of 5,000 to 15,000 Scoville units on the chili heat scale, serranos are up to five times hotter than their cousin, the jalapeño. (Jalapeños are rated at 2,000 to 5,000 units.
Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).
