UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.
ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The Tangerine tomato is a classic, open-pollinated heirloom beefsteak variety yielding large, glowing-orange fruits with a sweet, mild flavor and low acidity. Known for high yields, it takes about 85 to 90 days to mature and is exceptional for fresh slicing.
A true heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated variety passed down for generations—typically 40 to 50 years or more—that grows "true to type" from saved seed. Yes, the Tangerine tomato is an heirloom variety introduced commercially in the 1930s.
About the Tangerine Tomato
History: The Tangerine tomato was introduced by the Burpee seed company in 1937 (with records or selections tracing back to 1934), easily clearing the age threshold to be classified as a true heirloom.
Appearance: It produces large, slightly flattened or angular slicing tomatoes with skin the color of a ripe tangerine and golden-orange flesh.
Flavor & Traits: It features a mild, sweet, low-acidity flavor and is noted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to contain unique, highly bioavailable forms of lycopene.
Growing and Care Tips
Sowing: Start seeds indoors in pots or a warm bed at 20°C to 24°C about 5 weeks before the last frost.
Transplanting: Move outdoors into rich, loose soil after all danger of frost passes.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist to prevent cracking and blossom end rot; avoid splashing water on leaves.
Maintenance: Prune suckers and lower leaves regularly, and protect plants from cold weather below 50°F.
