UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS:

The Texas Rice pepper and the Purple Texas Rice Cross pepper are distinct but related varieties. The Texas Rice pepper is a wild chili pepper native to Texas, known for its small size (about the size of a grain of rice) and elongated shape, transitioning from green to red when ripe. The Purple Texas Rice Cross is a recent hybrid, resulting from a cross between a Texas Rice pepper and an unknown purple pepper. It produces small, cone-like peppers that turn from purplish-green to dark red as they mature. Both peppers are known for their heat, with the Purple Texas Rice Cross being hotter than the standard Texas Rice pepper.

Here's a more detailed look at each:

Texas Rice Pepper:

  • Botanical Name: Capsicum annuum L. var. glabriusculum
  • Size: Small, elongated, about 1/4 to 3/4 inch long, resembling a grain of rice
  • Color: Green to red when ripe
  • Heat: 10,000 to 30,000 Scoville heat units
  • Origin: Southern Texas, USA
  • Uses: Popular in Texas cuisine, often dried and used for powder or flakes

Purple Texas Rice Cross:

  • Origin: A cross between a Texas Rice pepper and an unknown purple pepper
  • Size: Small, cone-like, about the size of a pea
  • Color: Dark purplish-green to dark red as they mature
  • Heat: About 40,000 Scoville heat units
  • Uses: Excellent for fermentation (hot sauce) and drying
  • Plant: Sprawling, up to 4 feet tall, with purplish-green foliage, purple stems, and white flowers

Sow seeds in flats or pots 8 to 10 weeks prior to the expected outdoor planting date. Sow them shallowly, around 1/4 inch deep. Hot peppers, and especially super-hot peppers, have a well-earned reputation for being finicky to germinate, but you can increase germination rates by providing bottom heat (highly suggested).

Sincerely,
