UNIQUE CREEK HOMESTEAD SEEDS: All of our seeds are grown right here on our Unique Creek Homestead and not sourced from elsewhere. All seeds are collected each growing season and are 1-year old or less, stored in air-tight Mason jars. Seeds are harvested and labeled for storage each season, one plant/seed type at a time so seeds do not get mixed by accident during the process! The seeds we use at the start of each growing season come from the exact same seeds we sell.

ABOUT THESE SEEDS: The Watermelon Beefsteak tomato is a classic heirloom variety celebrated for its massive size, deep pinkish-red color, and exceptionally sweet, old-fashioned flavor. Despite its unique name, it is a true tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and is not related to watermelons; rather, it is named for its large size and juicy, rosy-pink flesh that resembles a slice of ripe watermelon.

Quick Facts & Overview

Type: Indeterminate heirloom vine.

Days to Maturity: Typically 75 to 85 days from transplanting.

Fruit Size: Giant, weighing anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds (450g to 1kg).Fruit Shape: Slightly flattened (oblate) with a lightly ribbed or scalloped texture.

History & Origin

This heirloom dates back to the late 19th century. It was preserved for nearly 100 years by mountain families in West Virginia before being collected and commercially introduced in 1958 by the famous seedsman George Gleckler.

Flavor and Culinary Profile

Taste: Known for a rich, complex flavor with a perfect balance of intense sweetness and low, mild acidity.

Texture: Very meaty and firm with small seed cavities, meaning each tomato is packed with thick, solid flesh and relatively few seeds.

Best Uses: It is the ultimate slicing tomato. A single slice can easily cover an entire sandwich or burger. It also works beautifully on a Caprese cheese board, in fresh salads, or processed into sweet, rich sauces.

Garden Growing Requirements

Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).

Soil: Throws best in well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Plant Support: Because the vines are indeterminate and the fruit is so incredibly heavy, these plants require sturdy cages, trellises, or staking to keep the branches from breaking and to lift the heavy fruit off the ground.

Pruning: Pruning to 1–3 main stems is often recommended to redirect energy away from wild foliage growth and toward massive tomato production.

Seed Starting: Seeds should be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your area's last expected frost date, then transplanted outside once the nights are consistently warm.

Sincerely,

Scott & Melissa
